Cookbook Corner – Chocolat

“Chocolat” By: Pierre Marcolini

It’s no secret that I LOVE anything and everything chocolate! So – can you imagine my love for this deliciously put together cookbook?

There are so many recipes in this book I can not possibly list all of them – or even half of them in this blog post! Just trust me when I say that you will want to add this amazing cookbook to your collection if you love chocolate – great sophisticated recipes – and gorgeous photographs.

There are sections from chocolate known areas of the world like Mexico, Brazil and Java that each include recipes of their own. There are sections in this book that you will want to tear out of the book – only to later frame them on your walls. Not that I’m recommending tearing apart this book – but seriously the photographs are exquisite!

I love the stories that are told throughout and the “From Bean to Bar” section that is basically like a storyline tracing the cacao tree from birth to finished chocolate bar. I love how it talks about proper cooking techniques – storing techniques and techniques that will make your finished dishes soar above anything you’ve made before.

Natural Bittersweet Chocolate Truffles – Natural Milk Chocolate – Crisp Milk Chocolate Praline Clusters – Black Sesame Seed Praline – Chocolate Soufflés – Ganache Filled Chocolate Cookies – Candied Lemon Peel Dipped in Chocolate – Soft Chocolate Caramel Candies – Chocolate Pastry Cream – Chocolate Marshmallows – Vanilla Scented Hot Chocolate and Praline Hearts. Those are just some of the interesting – complex and delicious recipes that fill this book.

I highly recommend this cookbook to the chocolate lover and to the cookbook collector who can not resist a cookbook filled with great stories, recipes and photographs.

Cookbook Corner – Gâteaux

“Gâteaux” By: Christophe Felder and Camille Lesecq

This book is huge in content – size – photos – recipe and taste! A beautifully laid out book that draws your attention from page one. The photos are page big and are fabulously paired with some of the best recipes you will find for some of your favorite desserts! I can not tell you how much fun I had looking through this book!

The sections that divide up this cookbook are – In One Bite – Sunday Brioches – Simple Cakes – Fruit Desserts – Celebration Cakes – Cakes of the World – Tarts – and Just for Fun. There are also wonderfully put together “step by step” photos that go with some of the more “complex” recipes.

Some of the recipes that make up this fabulous cookbook are – Champagne Ladyfingers, Pears in Pastry, Coconut Cookies, Lemon Tartlets, Cinnamon Stars, Jam-Filled Donuts, Bee Sting Cake, Puff Pastry Brioche, Stacked Crêpe Cake, Breton Buckwheat Cake, Parisian Cream Flan, Chestnut Cake, Lemon Mousse Cake, Red Berry Tart, Salted Caramel and Chocolate Mousse Cake, White Rose Cake, Pineapple Baba with Lime Meringue, Lime-Raspberry Macaron Cake, Black Forest Cake with Chocolate Cream, Speculoos Cookies, Fruit-Topped Cheesecake, Caramel-Chocolate Tart, Cherry Tart with Streusel Topping and Light Cheese Tart.

Some of the recipes have a couple different recipes that go with the finished product but those who may be wondering if the book may be to advanced – my answer would be no! Anything delicious takes time and patience and I love how there is nothing processed in this book and how the finished desserts have a fresh and familiar flavor – but unexpected and new at the same time.

Highly recommend this for those who love baking and beautifully done cakes, cookies and desserts.

The photos are beautiful – the recipes are beautiful and the stories are beautiful! I have tried several recipes from this book and all have turned out – well – beautifully! Ok – I will try and limit the use of that word throughout my review but I did want to get a point across here! Ha!

Just some recipes that fill this book are –

Buttermilk-Herb Dressing, Applesauce, Chicken Stock, Preserved Lemons, Ricotta Cheese, 5-Day Sauerkraut, Blueberry Jam, Peach Jam, Apple Butter, Sour Cream Coffee Cake, Any Day Pancakes, Crispy Waffles, Popovers, Stuffed Dates, Chicken Liver Mousse, Simple Crab Bisque, Vegetable Slaw, Purple Salad, Pan-Roasted Eggplant, Whole-Loaf Cheesy Garlic Bread, Ricotta Dumplings, Seafood Stew with Aioli, Fried Chicken, Pork Chops in Mustard Sauce with Apples, Porchetta, Shortbread, Apple Beehive, Teff Carrot Cake, Birthday Cake with Fluffy Milk Chocolate Frosting, Apple Pie, Flan, Lemon Pudding Cake and so many more!

Cookbook Corner – Cupcakes Forever

I’ve often thought about going over my blog and deleting old posts (giveaways and giveaway winners) and updating the spelling and English in some of my earlier posts (some of my earlier posts were just not well spell checked) but I got to thinking – why? I would not change anything that has lead me to the current spot on the journey I am on – so leave them alone. So what if some sentences “run on and on” and who cares if some of my old giveaway posts are still visible? All the actual RECIPES are error-free and are 110% promised to work. That is what matters. The heart of my blog. The recipes.

I have also thought about pulling back on my cookbook reviews – my “Cookbook Corner” features. But why? I love it and enjoy it. It is something that makes my blog different than the rest. There are thousands (probably millions) of people who are reviewing cookbooks online (and otherwise) and everyone is valued to express themselves and their opinions. Some of the cookbooks friends of mine review may not interest me (vegetarian, International, gourmet) and some of mine may not interest them. That is fine! There should be a wide variety of opinions and reviews for each cookbook. Not just one opinion, post or voice.

On that note I would like to thank everyone for joining me here (there are SO MANY of you followers and subscribers – THANK YOU) and introduce you to my newest cookbook love…

“Cupcakes Forever: Delicious Recipes For Cupcakes With Love From Lola’s”

This cookbook is fabulous! It is pocket size – about 1/4th the side of your typical cookbook but do not let the size fool you! This book is packed with delicious recipes for cupcakes and frostings. I have made several of the recipes from this book and easily one of my favorites is the cupcakes that are featured in the photos above. Their “Vanilla Cupcake” (page 24) and their “Basic Vanilla Buttercream” (page 20) are neither one “basic”. I have tried so many vanilla cupcake recipes and most of them fall flat. These, however, are flavorful, moist and deliciously vanilla.

The recipes are straightforward and easy to follow and the variety of flavors and flavor combinations are well welcomed. Just some of my favorites are…

“Red Velvet Cupcake” (page 35), “White Chocolate Cupcake” (page 44), “Blueberry Cupcake” (page 54), “Maple Syrup Cupcake” (page 73), “Rainbow Swirl Cupcake” (page 101), “High Hat Marshmallow Cupcake” (page 111), “Sticky Toffee Pudding Cupcake” (page 122) and “Banoffee Cupcake” (page 131). And those are just a FEW of the amazing and sometimes over the top cupcakes featured throughout.

I have marked so many more recipes to try and I can not wait to share with everyone my results! If you love cupcakes you NEED THIS BOOK in your life! Trust me. It is filled with delicious recipes, mouthwatering flavor combinations, smooth and flowing writing and photographs. Truly a treasure of a book.

Recipe Testing Cookbooks

Part of my job as “cookbook reviewer” is to not only look over the recipes to see if they sound and read correctly, but to prepare several of them to make sure the recipes actually work! The cookbook I’ve been focusing on lately is “Cupcakes Forever – Delicious Recipes for Cupcakes with Love from LOLA’S”. It’s a fabulous book and my review will be coming soon! Their recipe for “Vanilla Cupcakes” (page 24) and “Basic Vanilla Buttercream” (page 20) are seriously the best vanilla cupcakes I’ve ever had! Can’t wait to share my review of this cookbook with everyone! Stay tuned!

Cookbook Corner – Harvest

I am in love with this cookbook…

“Harvest” By: Stefani Bittner and Alethea Harampolis

This beautiful hardcover cookbook covers anything and everything that you may find yourself harvesting in your local garden. The photographs are beautiful and the pages stunning. This is not just a cookbook in terms of food but a cookbook that extends itself to venture into the realms of facial beauty, beauty products, household items and tips and tricks. Some of the “recipes” include –

“Poppyseed Dressing” (page 14), “Artichoke Arrangement” (page 34), “Edible Flower-Pressed Cheese” (page 38), “Lavendar and Mint Tea” (page 70), “Lemongrass Salt Scrub” (page 98), “Herb and Hive Honey Lip Balm” (page 126), “Tumeric Dye” (page 174) and “Bay Laurel Kitchen Wreath” (page 186).

The book is divided into sections which really brings out the “seasonal” aspect of this book. I highly recommend this for people who love gardening, love nature, love unexpected projects and love harvesting. A beautiful book with such a simple and beautiful meaning. So fun!

3 Year Anniversary!!!

BLAISE THE BAKER IS 3 YEARS OLD TODAY!!! I don’t even really know what to say other than THANK YOU all so much for the continuous support and dedication! I have met so many incredible people along the way and I’m so thankful for you all. Without my followers, my “fans”, my friends and family – none of this would be possible. I’m so thankful and filled with joy when I look back on this amazing journey so far and all that has been accomplished.

When I first started this journey my goal was to just simply share recipes, tips and tricks with people that could use them and enjoy them. I wanted to share my family recipes, stories and memories. I wanted to be of help to those who needed it in the kitchen. I wanted to inspire people and get people cooking and baking again. I wanted to break the stereotypes that only women belong in the kitchen and that only women can bake. I wanted to encourage families to prepare meals together and to get back to sharing their lives around the family table. I’ve maintained the same goals throughout this journey and haven’t compromised on my original intentions.

Along the way I have had opportunities that I would have never dreamed. I’ve been featured on websites, blogs and in newspapers and magazines. I’ve had people reach out for interviews and photoshoots. I have the amazing opportunity to share with you all some of my most meaningful and deliciously heartfelt recipes in my food column, “Chew This!” that appears on the first and third Sundays of each month in “The Courier-Times”. A newspaper that I have loved, respected and admired since I was 7 years old and would visit the newspaper offices with my Grandma Barbra – dropping off an item to be printed in the next edition. A newspaper that I’m proud to be a part of and honored to be given the privilege of space and time.

Most bloggers look at their “performance numbers” daily. I try to make it a habit to never look at mine because to me – that’s not what it’s about. It’s not about “hits” or numbers, shares or likes. To me, it’s about being 100% authentic with who I am, what I make and what I decide to share. What’s important, to me, is that authenticity.

My blog has expanded over the years into cookbook reviews, book reviews, product reviews, global features, guest bloggers and other featured elements that I love sharing with you all! My blog will also be expanding in 2017 to include restaurant and bakery reviews – which I’m over the moon with excitement about!

Don’t get me wrong – there have been bumps and bruises along the way. Each bump in the road I’ve taken as a learning lesson and a valuable teaching experience. I’ve had book clubs, book selling sites and an eBay store with my “Blaise the Baker” name attached, but those have fallen away to not only simplify things but to mainstream what my “brand” is about.

One of the most amazing experiences that has happened from my 2nd year anniversary to my 3rd is the publication of my very first cookbook! My cookbook, “Blaise the Baker Dessert First” launched last September. I have been blown away by the responses from it! There have been a couple of new printings and very soon – another reorder / reprint is in store. I’ve had the most amazing accounts of people writing to me – texting me – emailing me – calling me – telling me how much they LOVE my cookbook! That makes me so incredibly thankful and so incredibly happy.

If you’re reading this and would like to purchase a copy – the price is $12 plus $3 shipping and handling. There are 200 total recipes along with tips, tricks and family memories and stories. It’s a work I am so proud of presenting to everyone. Simply send $15 total to Blaise Doubman / Box 47 / Kennard, IN 47351. Or pay online through http://paypal.com Use my email – blaisejdx@gmail.com as a way to send the money. If you’re in the Henry County area, please stop by “The Book Nook” – where there are autographed copies to buy.

All in all – I’m so thankful for the opportunities I’ve had – and I’m so EXCITED for the opportunities that await in the future. Thank you all so much for being here with me on this journey. Thank you all so much for supporting me. Thank you all so much for the dedication, the feedback and the love. Most importantly, thank you for allowing me into your lives. You all mean so much to me!

Here’s to many years to come!!!

With all my love,

Blaise Doubman

Cookbook Corner – Chocolate

“Chocolate” By: Pierre Hermé and Sergio Coimbra

This is a chocoholics dream come true! This book is filled with fabulous, mouthwatering photographs that are simply stunning to the eyes! The coffee table sized book is HUGE in size – and HUGE in taste and texture. 37 recipes fill this book and each one is uniquely gourmet in its own way. Huge full color glossy chocolate photos line the pages and the text and colors will have your jaws dropping! Highly recommend this book to those who want a unique, elegant and classy look into the chocolate minds of two genius authors. Fabulous!
